TD Bank Financial Group supported the establishment of the new NSCAD/TD Centre for Community Service Learning. The Centre, the first of its kind among visual arts universities in Canada, will integrate community service learning (CSL) principles into the NSCAD curriculum while promoting partnerships between the community and the university.
NSCAD Students
How to Participate
Service Learning provides an opportunity for students to integrate their art practice through community collaboration with art projects or research in their respective field of study. When considering a placement opportunity please arrange an appointment to see Joann Reynolds-Farmer, Coordinator of Community Service Learning & Outreach Initiatives, nscad.ca / 442-4065. Students interested in registering for an Internship, Community Service Learning or Design Practicum Placement can download an information package here.
Placements
Students can choose potential placements through traditional Internships, Film Internships, Community Service Learning or Design Practicums. New placements are being added throughout the year and we are always happy to work with new community partners on projects. If you have a new placement idea, come talk to us about it.
Prospective Internships, Placements or Practicums
For community based organizations service learning can mean the realization of projects with the facilitation of an emerging artist, craftsperson or designer. Organizations involved with service learning will benefit from working with talented and creative NSCAD students and faculty who are eager to see transformational change through art, craft and design. The Coordinator acts an a liaison between community based groups, students and faculty enabling projects to flourish.
Find out how your organization can become a part of the Community Art Partners Program, involved in independent projects or work with our Research Fellow. Contact Joann Reynolds Farmer, Coordinator of Community Service Learning & Outreach Initiatives, nscad.ca / 442-4065.
Information for Faculty
A service learning experience can come in the form of an independent project through Independent Study, Internships / CSL course enrolment or as an independent project while enrolled in other NSCAD course offerings. If you are interested in learning more about how to integrate CSL into your course curriculum or how to support CSL opportunities for students please contact Joann Reynolds Farmer, Coordinator of Community Service Learning & Outreach Initiatives, nscad.ca / 442-4065.
Saint George’s Youthnet, in collaboration with the NSCAD / TD Centre for Community Service Learning, partnered and successfully received funding from the 4C’s Foundation for a community collaborations project entitled Illuminate. Illuminate involved a series of art related projects over the summer. Illuminate brought together two diverse groups of students along with artists, Saint George Youth and residents of the north end.

Within this project the focus engaged the children and their wider community through the transformative experience of an illuminary procession of lanterns, dance, music and drumming. The children along with art students from NSCAD and the Centre for Cultural Technology and Innovation, created lanterns – glowing artworks – that became part of a procession of dance and music at this year’s Extravajam. Workshops for the community allowed a wide variety of participants to join in this community get-together. As an artform, the lanterns integrated collage, printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, theatre and shadow puppetry.
Special thanks go to the 4C's Foundation and their generous support as well as the staff at Saint George's Youthnet. With the ongoing support from volunteers and community members we have the opportunity to build strong, vibrant and creatively interesting communities.
